Wood Lathe Maintenance

Keeping it turning and turning well.

Every lathe needs some care from time to time especially with some of the wood we throw at them. Some people like to finish wood on the lathe and that presents its own form of maintenance challenges. Wet wood throws water on the steel and tools leave dings from catches and the like. Then there is all that dust to mix with oil on moving parts. As I do the regular stuff on my lathes I will note it here.
My 15" Craftsman uses a mechanical variable speed mechanism known as a Reeves drive. When mine became static due to dust on the shafts mixing with the lubricant, it was time to clean it. wood lathe Reeves drive
