Part off at the spur center using a straight or skew chisel and leaving a rounded point. Sharp points will quickly be worn down in the garden work.

A bit of oil pops the grain and gives protection from soil and water. I like double boiled linseed oil for garden projects as it protects well, looks good and is easily reapplied as necessary. On the other hand, no finish is really necessary.
