Advanced Woodturning Project - Two Raised Arm Birch Vase - Page 5

Some of the woodturning design continues as the shape takes form.

following the line of the bark down the side

So far, at least on this side, I am following the line of the bark down the side and it looks alright, but I am beginning to wonder if the stem of this piece should not be a lot narrower? A few lines drawn in confirm the suspicion.

rotating the piece on the lathe allows for more pespective

Rotating the piece for this rather poor picture emphasizes the need for a far more tapered appearance to the vase.

a cove to provide a target

So I make a cove to provide a target and start to "connect the dots."

time to remove more of the interior

I think it is beginning to look better but it is now time to remove more of the interior.

a hook tool can work a fair distance from the tool rest

While a hook tool can work a fair distance from the tool rest, I like to have support where possible so I move the gate up. This is one of those times you want to be sure and rotate the piece by hand before turning on the lathe. Those wings will not like much of a bump.

getting the tool rest close

Close works.
