A rough circle with a marker is sufficient for cutting with the chain saw. My lathe is large enough to handle this piece without knocking off the corners but it is always nicer to start with the best balanced wood. There will be enough balance problems with the grain changing densities.

Close enough for horse shoes, hand grenades and mounting on the lathe

Mounting the faceplate as close to center as possible does not necessarily mean mounting it in the center of the chain saw cut. I use #14 3/4" metal screws for the 3" face plate

The blank is mounted with the face plate and the tail stock is brought up for extra support. It is likely not needed but sometimes overkill is vastly underrated. I hate losing wood and especially having it attack me.

With the rough turning done the colors and grain are starting to be evident.
